Two routes to national unity, only one really suits Nigeria

NIGERIA is not a ‘nation’. At best, it is a union of nations, or a ‘state’ of nations. It has the elements of statehood, but not of nationhood. A state is a political construct, with sovereignty and power of coercion; but a nation is a body of people with a common descent, language and culture. While a state can be multinational, consisting of culturally different or heterogenous entities, a nation is defined by its cultural similarity or homogeneity. Crucially, a nation is an affair of the heart; but a state, unless it forges a shared identity, can be no more than a geographical expression!

Nigeria, 6 others account for 65% global gas flaring — World Bank

World Bank By Ediri Ejoh The latest report of the World Bank’s  Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR) has reported that  Nigeria, Russia, Iraq, Iran, United States, Algeria and Venezuela have been the world’s leading seven gas flaring countries in the past 9 years, accounting for 65 percent of global gas flaring. The report which was first launched in 2012, stated that these seven countries produce 40 per cent of the world’s oil each year, but account for roughly two-thirds or 65 per cent of global gas flaring. Gas flaring, the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction, takes place due to a range of issues, from market and economic constraints, to a lack of appropriate regulation and political will. Police rescue 7 kidnap victims in Edo

The Police Command in Edo said it rescued seven kidnap victims and killed three suspected kidnappers during an operation in Ahor community. This is contained in a statement in Benin on Monday by SP Kontongs Bello, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO). Bello disclosed that in continuation of the forest and bush combing promised by CP Phillip Ogbadu, the Commissioner for Police in Edo, the tactical team of the command and the local vigilante achieved this feat. He said that with the seven rescued victims, and the 13 rescued last Saturday, the total number of victims rescued between Saturday and Monday were now 20. He explained that the combined team encountered the suspected kidnappers at the Ahor axis of the Benin-Lagos bypass and engaged them in a fierce gun battle, where three of the suspected kidnappers were killed.
